Once the audio was officially released, a lyric video filmed at Micky’s in West Hollywood then saw release Eventually, the Inez and Vinoodh directed music video was released to widespread acclaim and viral success. “Applause”: the leaked…err lead single and last track to have actually made the album. REVIEW: For this section, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the three official singles two promotional singles and movie tie-in track released in the era of ARTPOP. How else does an album go #1 on the Billboard 200, sell 252,000 units in the first week within the forecasted 250k-300k sales figures, yield two Top 15 singles out of the three released but then end up reading as a pert near faux pas? Revisiting the album especially in hindsight, requires a delve into an era where the metrics of success changed as the era was going. It is also, a hard era to pin down as to what went wrong and defending the album against critics that have long since either written off Gaga before 2016 or slowly but eventually came around to the album in the short 6 going on 7 years after the release. It’s also an era marked by a laundry list of boondoggles and WTF moments such as a flying dress, VOLANTIS, fan behavior going off the rails in the form of not one offering sex in exchange for album purchases on Craigslist, not two offering sexual favors for units selling but THREE instances of Gaga fans offering sex for Applause/ ARTPOP purchases and that’s not even getting to the VEVO era live performances, culminating in Gaga’s rendition of “Aura” that has her resembling a gimp at a masquerade It also marked the perfect storm of what happens when spectacle becomes unfulfilled or failed ambition, scrutiny becomes damn near overwhelming even after the dust settles and an eventual struggle to recapture brand awareness. BACKGROUND: ARTPOP was the third album but fourth collective studio release from Lady Gaga, who by 2013 had amassed three #1s on the Billboard Hot 100, a string of Top 5/Top 10 hits and five of her now nine Grammy awards.
